Panel to discuss Arab Spring protests, five years later
Augustana College will host a panel discussion, "Arab Spring: Five Years Later," at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, in Room 102 of the Hanson Hall of Science.
Focusing on the aftermath of the Arab Spring protests of 2011, the panel will feature Professor Juan Cole of the University of Michigan Department of History, and Dr. Maytha Alhassen, a Provost Ph.D. Fellow in American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California.
Author of The New Arabs: How the Millennial Generation is Changing the Middle East, Cole is a columnist for the Nation and Truthdig and writes op-ed pieces for The Washington Post, The Guardian, and the San Francisco Review, among others. Cole also appears regularly on the NewsHour, Nightline, Al Jazeera and NPR.
Alhassen has written and appeared on CNN, and also has written for CounterPunch, Mic, and many academic journals and print publications. Her essay "I Speak for Myself" appeared in a book of essays by American Muslim women. Alhassen also co-edited Demanding Dignity: Young Voices from the Front Lines of the Arab Revolutions.
