Former Augie coach Davis fondly remembered
Some would say that football coach Don Davis was an ``artist'' when it came to teaching and getting the most out of the offensive linemen who played for him.
Those lessons also led to some indelible pictures.
``I'll always remember him standing on that five-man sled and having those linemen pushing him all over Ericson Field,'' said Tom Schmulbach, calling Davis an artist of coaches. ``I picture Ben-Hur when I see Don on that sled.''
News of Davis's death on Saturday shook the local coaching community of which Davis was a part of his entire life. He was 82.
``I was in tears today,'' said Dave Wrath, Augustana sports information director after hearing of Davis' passing. ``I loved the man.''
